In Canada, an estimated figure indicates that 90% of all sexual assault victims are women and 300,000 to 500,000 cases of sexual assault are reported against women per year ("Sexual Assault: A fact sheet prepared for the National Panel on Violence Against Women" by Dianne Kinnon). Children and youth are over represented as victims of sexual assaults.
Although they represent only 21% of the population, 6 out of every 10 sexual assaults reported to police involved a child or youth under 18 years of age (Statistics Canada, 2005). With odds like 1 out of 3 males will be sexually assaulted by the age of 13, 1 out of every 2 women will be sexually assaulted by the age of 18 and that women between the ages of 16-24 are 2-5 times more likely to be victims of sexual assault than any other age ("Sexual Assault: A fact sheet prepared for the National Panel on Violence Against Women" by Dianne Kinnon), it is time that young people are equipped with tools that no longer scare them into paranoia but empower them into self awareness and assertiveness.
